Do i need a antistatic wrist strap to replace a video card?

ok, this isnt my account its actually my mom's since i dont have a yahoo account. why am i using it well i was searching for answer yet didnt find one that could answer all of my questions. ok here i go. so there a new game coming out and i would like to replace my video card/graphics card. so ive watched videos on youtube and people seem to use a wrist strap. i would like to know what it is and why use them. is it maybe dangerous if i dont? also, as i was looking for answer, i found words such as "ground" and "electrostatic discharge" which i dont know the meaning of. could some of you maybe update me on this? also is it possible that after i replace the video card and turn the computer on, nothing shows on the monitor? im sorry for writing alot im just very cautious. thanks in advance to anyone that replies to this without being mean or uninformative. (ive seen comments with mean thing and unnecessary stuff in them...)|||I like to see people being cautious with things like this, better to be safe then sorry i always say =)

Basicly, an Anti-static wristband grounds you and removes all the static charge that you build up when you walk around and move. Thats why sometimes when you touch something that grounded, you get an electric shock.

Anti static wrist bands are used to prevent people short circuting thier computer components when installing them as one discharge of static electricity from yourself can fry the component.

Some more info on this

Always use an anti-static wrist strap when working on a computer except when working on monitors: more about that below. One end is an elastic band that fits around your wrist and which is connected to an alligator clip by a wire. The clip connects to a metal part of the computer chassis, which equalizes the voltage between you and the computer, thus avoiding static sparks.

Better anti-static kits also include a rubberized mat that is placed below the computer while you are working on it. This not only provides better anti-static protection, but also protects your table from scratches.

Always grasp a metal part of the computer chassis with your bare hand before you touch anything inside. Do this even if you are wearing an anti-static wristband.

Always handle electronic components by a non-conducting (non-metallic) edge. Don't touch the pins or other connectors.

Never plug an ATX power supply into AC power unless it is connected either to a computer's motherboard or to a dummy test load.

Always use a UL-approved surge protector or an Uninterruptible Power Supply that incorporates surge and spike protection.

Never eat, drink, or smoke while working on a computer.

I would advise getting an anti-static wrist band. You can get them cheap from computer stores and do take away the risks if used properly

As to your second question as to weather nothing on screen will show, i highley doubt it unless there is a fault with the video card itself.

Ive installed many video cards and nevcer come across this. Make sure you install the new drivers that came with your video card as this will cause it to not function properly.|||I've put together several computers so far and never used one, but it's a safety measure. If you have it, you will avoid any danger of damaging chips on the card through static electricity. But as I said, the likelihood of that happening is quite low...|||i dont own one never used on and dont even touch the case before i do work and nothing ever happened|||You *should* use a wrist strap, but you don't have to buy one! You can easily make one out of tinfoil and attach it to the computer case, or make sure you are touching the computer case with a hand/exposed skin at all times. (It achieves the same thing as a wrist strap)

If you turn on the computer after replacing the video card and nothing shows up on the screen there are a few problems that could of occurred: 1. You did not install the card correctly, reinstall the card and try to boot up again. 2. The monitor is plugged into the wrong port. If you are upgrading from a motherboard GPU sometimes you need to go into the BIOS (search the net for instructions on how to do this) and disable the motherboard GPU (graphics card), then replug into your newly installed GPU and everything should work.

Keep in mind some newer graphics cards have a extra power connector that you need to hook up that is usually located on the top or back (when installed) of the card.

Good luck!

PCI Express Video card not working....?

OK, today I installed a new motherboard and processor (ASrock N68-S and a Phenom II x3 720), along with a clean install of windows 7. Everything works fine, exept for my 8800GTS video card. It was working fine before I did the upgrades. The motherboard has an on-board chipset, and that works good. But whenever I try and plug the monitor cable into the 8800GTS, the screen is blank and nothing happens (windows does boot up though because I can hear the start-up sound), and for some reason the GPU fan sounds like its on 100%. Ive tried everything to fix it, Ive set the Graphics card priority in the BIOS to PCI Express, and I've updated the BIOS to the newest version. Anyone have any ideas to what the problem could be? Thanks!|||Some PCs need you to turn off the onboard graphics in the bios & enable the dedicated card there as well. Then restart the PC & if windows pops up useing the PCI-E card, go to nvidia.com & download & install the newest driver for the new card & restart the PC again..|||Hey Joe i was wondering if you had solved the problem with your video card, i'm having the same problem and have the same motherboard as you. Thanks

Try the fix on this page

http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/2740…

put your minecraft.exe in any folder, just make sure you copy the path, and rename it to minecraft.jar

then open notepad, paste this line

java -Xmx800m -jar "PATH\Minecraft.jar

paste the path to the folder where minecraft is into PATH

then click save -> save it as NAME.bat (NAME can be anything that you want)

then from now on, double-click this NAME.bat file to open minecraft... and do not close the cmd that will open...

example:

I put minecraft.jar on C:\

so on notepad I do this:

java -Xmx800m -jar "C:\Minecraft.jar

While playing video games, my computer freezes. I upgraded video card with no real luck. c?

AMD athlon XP with Windows XP, 512 ram, geForce 6200 video card with 256 mb ram, games hang up. tried updating drivers, worked for about a month.please help!!!!|||Get into your BIOS and check the temperature of your processor after your computer freezes. I was having this same problem, and it was heat related for me. It's a quick fix with a new processor fan (they're like $10).

So...

Next time your computer freezes up, restart it. Before it loads the Windows XP screen, hit the DEL (Delete) key a couple of times to get into your BIOS. It's usually DEL, but it could be something else. When your computer is starting up, pay attention to what it says and look for the "Hit <key> to enter setup." Hit that key to get into your BIOS. Your BIOS will have temperature information in it somewhere. Just look around until you find it. If memory serves me correctly, the Athlon processors should be running right around 100° F. If you're up at like 140 or 150, you'll know that heat is the problem. Like I said earlier, a new processor fan is an easy fix for that solution.|||it could be you need more memory on your computer. also try scanning for spyware or viruses (you never know!)|||whoa - just 512 of RAM ???

I have windows 7 ultimate so,How do i update the video card driver on my computer?

Go to control panel, System and Security, System, Device Manager, then find your Video card double click on it and click driver. Then update driver.|||First you have to find out the manufacturer of your video card by going to My Computer - right click - Device Manager - video adapter. After you know your video card model go to guru3d.com and download your drivers - it's much faster then going to the manufacturer's site.

Good luck|||First make sure you know the exact video card model, if you don't know it, you can use free software like CPU-Z, SIW or HWInfo to find it out. Then go to the manufacturer site and download the appropriate driver. It will come with a setup/install program, which you can run to install the driver.|||It should update and install it Automatically. If not, then visit its manufactures site and look under 'Support', . Windows 7 nearly always updates these kinds of drivers automatically though. Best wishes to you.|||Go to the video card manufacturers website and there should be a section for downloading drivers for your card.Find the latest driver and install it

Video cards and Physics cards?

I just bought Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 for the PC, and when it does the diagnostics screen (it will still run) the video card needs a update on drivers. I am going to look into this, but I have a question.

I have always wanted to get a Physics card. In case you dont know what that means, its a card that sits seperatly from your video card and adds graphics power to your video.

Example: on a normal video card if a mail box explodes, you see specks flying, representing mail. On a physics card, you see mail flying.

Now here's my question: My card is slightly old and i dont really want to spend the money to replace it if i dont have to.

But Id love to get a physics card.

Question: Can a physics card upgrade a regular card's standings, to qualify it for any problems with a game?

Or do i need to replace it and then get a physics?|||physisx cards are great if you need a little extra boost and already have a great vid card...but if you have an old card it's not really worth it...you would be much better off to spend the 200 bucks on a new video card verses the small improvements that you will see in the phyx' card...the fact is that it will only work with some games and the it ranges from slightly better colors to more detail...but replacing your existing old video card with say a low end 88xx for 250.00 would give you way more benefits in all games.|||what you computer hardware type?

test DX setup .|||the physics card should still make some difference, but they do costs a lot.

I think if I were you I would upgrade my graphics card before getting a physics card, the graphics card will improve the performance alot more then the physics card.

Will updating my video card help if I get the blue screen of death from World of Warcraft?

If I play for 30 minutes, blue screen.

It's not eve that laggy, just the blue screen.

By "updating" I mean installing a newer driver. If this will help, what do I do to actually INSTALL the driver?

Thanks in advance.|||Yes, you have to update your computer drivers.Download them from official website.

But if you are not expert on this, you can try some utility. What manufacture of your laptop is? DELL? Google to find "DELL Drivers Update Utility". or find other driver utilities here http://www.dgtsoft.com.

Video card not recognized at boot pci-e slot?

my internal videocard crapped out on my ati radeon express 200 motherboard. I can turn off the internal video via BIOS. When I insert the video card into the pci-e slot the machine will not start the boot sequence. No action on the hard drive at all. ANy ideas what setting I may need to update in BIOS to get the PCI-e slot recognized? My power supply is plenty big at 430W... that was the first suggestion form the tech guy at the cpu store.

Thanks!|||There's no need to get into BIOS to get that internal video disabled. As far as I can see, it will automatically did that for you when you had a PCI-E graphic card inserted.

Besides, if the internal graphic were down, so will be the North-bridge chip-set. You see, internal graphic card does not have a chip of its own. The graphical part is glued into the north-bridge, which controls the memory, pci-express and talks to the south-bridge. If the graphical part was down, how can you be sure it didn't take out the memory / PCI-E function as well? I mean, they were in the same air-plane when the air-plane crashed.

Should you still don't want to acknowledge the fact that your motherboard have die, you can grab yourself a Debug card. (search Debug Card on Ebay you'll find it).

A Debug Card is basically a PCI card where you plug it into your motherboard. Soon as the PC switches on, it will carried on a series of Power-On-Self-Test (POST). The progress of the POST is shown on the debug card as LED letters and digits. With the letters and digits on where it stops, do a search on Google and you'll find which part of the POST (which hardware) it failed.

Note, some debug card also shows 3.3v, 5v and 12v at the same time. Should one of these LED fail, you know its the Power Supply.

BTW, I guess you didn't bring the PC to that Computer tech guy to carry out a check before you buy that Power Supply. Cause if you did, I will never go into that shop again.

... 430w... is that Antec Earthwatt 430 or Corsair CX430? So long as it isn't Cooler Master extreme 430 then that's fine.

Video card questions?

So, like a lot of people, I bought the Sims 3 and installed it but now it says my video card isn't supported.

1. What exactly is a video card?

2. Is it something you can buy and install into your computer yourself or must a pro do it?

3. Are there any programs or updates I can get from the internet to be able to play the game without the graphics messing up?|||The video card is a chip that fits in a slot inside your computer. You can see the back of this chip on the outside of your computer. its where your monitor plugs in. You can install the card yourself. You just have to find out how to open the left side panel of your case. Once you have it open. There's two places your video card might be. Just check where the plug for the monitor goes. If the plug goes into the back of the motherboard, (big chip that everything is plugged into) Then you just need to proceed to installing the card. If your monitor plugs into the back of a chip that is in a slot on your motherboard. You need to unscrew the slot and carefully remove the card. Pop the new card in and youre done. Remember not to screw it in too tight or too loose.

Before you buy your video card, you will need to follow the directions I explained in order to determine what type of card your computer supports. If you could tell me the model number and brand of computer I could tell you which kind.|||Hopefully you have a desktop, otherwise, you are out of luck.

The video card is responsible for outputting the images displayed on your screen.

You can easily install one yourself. All you need to know is the slot type and power supply of your computer.

Video cards are hardware, so software won't help you improve your performance.

How to improve Dell laptop video?

Recently I posted a question on here asking if it is possible to upgrade a video card in a Dell Precision M4400 and was told it cannot be done because the card is on the motherboard for good, so my response is what can I do to improve this matter? Any other upgrades/patches/updates/downloads that can help me?

Thanks alot|||Sadly, no.

You could try to over clock the card in there now but then you risk damaging if not killing your laptop for good.

Also, laptops weren't made to keep the laptop super cool so adding any more heat will not help the issue (Which is what would happen if you over clocked it)

I can recommend you uninstall any crud or sopyware or unneeded programs to speed things up a little.

goodluck!|||Hardware no.. but may be u can upgrade ur RAM and switch to XP for increased performance

I recently installed a new nividia GeForce video card?

Its a model 9400GT and after installing it my comptuer is randomly going to blue screen and restarting. Whats the cause of this? My power supply is adequate, and I have the latest driver updates for it. How do I fix this problem?|||Could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software. You can also run a free registry scan using utilities from http://rcyj.com|||Hey,

With the new graphics cards they usually come with extra power, if it's not plugged in this might be the cause of your blue screen.

i just added a new 1.5GB about a month ago and i'm thinking about updating the graphic card to geforce 9800gtx+ as my current card is having some problem.

i believe that the PSU on my computer is only 350W, and the 9800 require 450W. I was wondering if it's ok to update the graphic without updating the PSU?

I don't really game much, although i do lots of video editing and recording in some game and photoshop. beside 9800gtx+ does anyone have any suggestion on a different card that doesn't require much power supple but allow me to do most of the work above?|||You added what? Another 1.5GB of RAM? I'm assuming you mean a 1.5TB hard drive, lol.

The 9500 (the card that came with the system) should be fine. How is it giving you problems? Try updating the video drivers http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.asp… .

There is no way I would put a 9800 in if it requires 450 and you only have 350W. First off, it could cause damage, secondly a power supply a relatively cheap, noting that it "protects" all other components and hardware.Third, even if you got it to work, it would put so much strain on your power supply, it wouldn't last more than a year and would require replacement and may also damage hardware.

As stated above, you don't require anything more than the 9500 that's supplied with the purchase.

Lastly, you don't NEED a 650W, 550W, or even 450W power supply (as others have suggested). I built my mom's computer a year ago and it has a 380W power supply and runs flawlessly. If you do intend to upgrade your power supply, go for something at about 450W. It'll have a better energy efficiency than a more powerful PSU, and will last just as long and cost much cheaper.

Message me if you require additional assistance.

EDIT:

If it's really loud, it's almost certainly due to the fan. Try using a program called Rivatuner to adjust the fan speed. As long as your GPU doesn't exceed 55-60deg when idle, it should be absolutely fine.

If your video card performs without issue, then I wouldn't replace it (waste of money).|||NOOOOO don't upgrade without updating the PSU.

Your current card may have problems just because of your PSU as it is. Go buy a new PSU, brand name, trusted, 650W+ (I didn't do the checking so yea, don't go exactly by me, but at least 650W).

A good site to go for all this stuff is www.techsupportforum.com

It is a free site, and I am just a member but I do recommend them to a lot of people because they are extremely helpful.|||NO, NO, NO!!! If you run that graphics card that requires more power then the PSU has, you bill burn up the PSU. This will not only kill the PSU but may damage your other system components like your CPU, Hard Drive, Motherboard and stuff with very unstable power and voltages!

My game won't run, Is my video card the problem?

The game i want to play requires a shader model 3 video card with 256 MB (NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT / ATI XI900 or equivalent) with latest manufacturer drivers. I have Intel(R) G33"G31 Express Chipset Family.

It doesn't ave something called Hardware T&L wich is not met by another game i play alot so that isn't necessary i guess, but the video card also doesn't have Vertex shader version and has 2.0 pixel shader instead of the required 3.0 Before i run out and buy a new Video card, is this my problem or do i need to update drivers or whatever. I'm so confused, this game wont run! thanks for your help.|||Well if your graphics card isn't powerful enough, it is going to crap out before it even gets started. Why lag when the first thing it does is lag bringing the game up... Sounds like your graphics card is telling you "I QUIT"...|||It is really impossible to say. I suggest that you download and install the latest driver for this card. Also audio drivers, too.

If it doesn't work, then it doesn't work. For whatever reason...|||go to this website and see if you can find the game you are trying to play.

I have GeForce 4 MX440 video card and want to know the difference between that and a GeForce 3. Do you know?

I recently purchased Desperate Housewives the Game and it says that I need a GeForce 3 card. I was thinking that the GeForce 4 MMx 440 would be more advanced. Am I wrong? If so, will I need to purchase a new card or is it possible to download updates for the GeForce 4 MX440? I can get the game to run, but it crashes and some of the color is off. Your help is appreciated!|||Yes unfortunately , you are a victim of marketing.

Even though the GeForce 4 MX440 sounds better because it's a 4 , instead of a 3 like in GeForce 3, it's actually not better.

The GeForce 4 MX440 is based on the NV17 gpu, which only supports Direct X 7.

Now the GeForce 3 is based on the NV20 gpu, and this chip supports Direct X 8.

Your game needs a Direct X 8 card in order to work ok, since it says it needs a GeForce 3 card.|||Games like SIMS2 will fallback to an earlier version of Direct X in order to allow the biggest market to buy the game.

Sims2 has min. requirement of GeForce2, so it falls back to Direct x 7, that is why you can play it.

I guess the Desperate Housewives game only runs on Direct x 8.

How do I update my Intel(R) 82865G graphics controller video card on my Desktop which runs on Windows XP?

you can purchase a graphics card and plug into a pcie x16 slot or an agp slot whichever your motherboard may use . Good luck|||That graphics controller is apart of your chipset, it is not a seperate video card. You would have to update the chipset to update the video controller

Is there any way to increase a laptops video card's ram?

I was looking at can you run it website and I have found out that I cannot play most games because my video cards ram is to small is there any way to increase a laptops video card ram and do you have an estimate on how much the update would cost or any websites thanks.|||Nope--not usually. Only the fanciest laptops (like mine) have updatable video cards. Even those with discrete (replaceable) graphics cards, the RAM is attached to the device and (generally) can't be expanded. There is nothing in the BIOS that can be changed to increase the amount of RAM a video card uses. There is a cache setting there but it's for overflow--not for everyday operations.|||You can not play most games because your video card shares from RAM most likely.. but to change the amount of ram that is shared for video you will go into the BIOS.|||Sorry, most likely you will not be able to upgrade your laptop's video card. Most video/graphics cards in laptops are integrated, meaning video processes rely on CPU power and the motherboard to produce graphics. This means there is no actual seperate graphics card you can easily remove.

Although some graphics cards have dedicated memory, major manufacturers (nVidia, ATI) do not offer upgrade options for laptops.|||Usually updating a video card in your laptop is really hard to perform .... the most upsetting thing is you might have to fork out money for a new high spec laptop, the easiest thing to upgrade in a laptop is the memory and hard disk drive because no matter how big memory can get, the size of the hardware doesn't increase, but your graphics card might only be a Intel Integrated Card and they are generally very small. And this means if you buy a more updated graphics card with more memory onboard, that the card size might increase there might not be enough room where the Intel Integrated card is... it is better going on your laptop manufacturers website and equiring on the support section. Good luck!|||Ok, laptop video cards come in two types, one is embedded like intel’s GMA cards or Graphics Media Accelerator Cards and an external card like Nvidia’s or ATI’s Graphics Cards… For intel’s GMA, it is solely limited to your RAM (Random Access Memory), the more ram you have, the more you can maximize your graphics card, meaning if your intel GMA says 128mb, you may or may not receive the full 128mb unless you have the maximum ram which can be placed in your laptop, (Old laptops may or may have a maximum capacity of 1 Gb RAM or less but there are a few who can take up 2 Gb max). For Nvidia or ATI gfx (short for graphics) card, you can have “Extended memory” other than the memory solely for the graphics card which depends also on your RAM and the limit of the Card, most gfx card of nvidia have a maximum of 512mb or less depending on the model (Not including new models like the 8series). ATI has different tastes going up to 800mb or less at 2 Gb ram.

Note: There are no softwares to increase your graphics card memory, but there are some that try to make you believe that their program can boost your gaming performance but most are just frauds.

Conclusion: you can try increasing your RAM, but this will not always be the case unless you have nvidia or ati as your graphics card. =) If your using windows vista, turn off your aero transparency and try playing again.

You can email me for more questions. =)

Edit:

Your graphics card is nvidia 6150 go, this graphics card is one of the midrange graphics card placed on laptops just barely trying to run windows vista. I've heard a rumor that some laptops can have their video card change but it would cost alot, it's better to buy a new laptop if you're considering to update from this. nvidia 6150 go can only have a max of 128shared memory and doesn't have its own solo RAM. Buy a new laptop if you need the graphics badly since this video card is one of the embedded type.|||http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie…

This laptop can play 171 games, including the popular World of Warcraft Burning Crusade. The auction bids are up to $100 and probably won't go over $500.

Hope that helps

Question about updating my video card drivers?

If I have a overclocked graphics card, and I update my drivers, does it erase the overclock done to it? It's a BFG NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT OC. So the overclock was done to it before I bought it, I dont want to update any drivers and end up not having it overclocked anymore. Thanks.|||the card should run on the same frequency regardless of the drivers|||If you have an "OC" model it is over-clocked at the factory on a hardware level. Upgrade Graphics/Video Card?

I wish to upgrade the graphics memory on two PC's, Firstly an Ei System 5002 - On Board SiS651, what sort of graphics card can I purchase that would be compatible with this computer? It currently has a 32mb integrated graphics which needs urgent updating.

Secondly I have a Dell Optiplex GX270 that I would like to update the graphics on, which graphics card would I need to purchase for this computer?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I haven't got a clue on what to look for, stupidly I bought some 1GB of graphics memory not knowing if it would be compatible so would like not to make the same mistake.

Thanks.|||hi mate

as the other answers have noted the ei-system 5002 supports a agp x8 bus which means you cannot use any of the more powerful cards such as the geforce 9600gt and 9800gt however saying that there are some excellent agp card avalible at some decent prices

we shall begin at the top and currently the fastest and best agp card there is the "ati radeon HD3850"( http://www1.sapphiretech.com/us/products…

i have this in one of my systems and its a awesome peice of kit that will run all the latest games including crysis and bioshock

its specifications are decent aswell which include a 668mhz core clock and 512mb of gddr3 memory running at 828mhz(1686mhz ddr effective) and when you add on the sizable 256bit memory interface and the resulting 52.9gb/sec memory bandwidth you have a card thats as fast and in some cases faster than some of the pci-express cards around

however power comes at a price and the radeon HD3850 is around £95 online but its money well spent, and will allow you to continue to use your agp based pc for a good few months to come

allthough ati have released several cards supporting direct x 10 nvidia have not released any which is a shame however another agp card i have owned thats pretty fast is the "geforce 7900gs"( http://www.pcupgrade.co.uk/productdetail…

this is a excellent card and has some nifty specs including a 450mhz core clock and 256mb of gddr3 memory clocked at 1320mhz,it also has a 256bit memory interface and a memory bandwidth of 42gb/sec

however the geforce 7900gs is a excellent card if you like overclocking, using nvidia,s coolbits registry fix i was able to get the card running at 538mhz core clock speed and the memory to 1480mhz,which resulted in a 5gb/sec improvement in memory bandwidth, not bad for free

and i was also suprised to see the gpu temperture had not increased at all,so i could of probally squeezed the memory clock to 1500mhz if i wanted to

the geforce 7900gs is well worth considering however it comes with a massive price tag(approx £150) but you can find it cheaper if you look around

finally another brilliant agp card is the radeon x1950 pro, this was once the king of the hill and this was mainly down to its 36 pixel pipelines and excellent core and memory speeds, however its been thin on the ground of late and when you can find it expect to pay in excess of £90 for it,however its money well spent

theres one at http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Component… its currently out of stock but is due back in around the end of the month

its specs include a 575mhz core clock and 512mb of gddr3 memory rated at 1380mhz ddr effective, but its the 36 pixel piplines than make this card, its just a pitty that these programmable pipelines have now been replaced by stream processors, however the x1950 pro is still a formidable card and is well worth considering

there are some other budget priced agp cards such as the radeon x1650pro(£32) and the geforce 7600gt(£60) however as with all agp cards they are difficult to find

so there you have it,agp cards are still around however due to their arcitecture they are more expensive to manufactuer so this is why they seem more expensive than their pci-express counterparts

i hope this helps, any problems let me know

good luck mate !|||A quick look at the specs for the Dell confirms that it uses an AGP type slot. There are other problems however. There are several different types of case some are SFF small form factor and may only be designed to take a "slimmed down" or "half height card". Without knowing which case you have we cannot advise further. AGP card are old technology and half height AGP cards are virtually non-existent nowadays.

More importantly you need to be carefull of the power requirements. These Dells really only have a power supply built for the standard config and little else. If you go putting in a more powerfull card you may find you need a more powerfull PSU. Dell PSUs can be proprietry esepcially for SFF cases so standard PSUs may not fit.

The same general principles will apply to your other PC - check it uses a standard height card and that the PSU is adequate - 300W should be sufficient for a mid ranking graphics card. Upgrading these older PCs often is not economic I'm afraid|||Your Ei system would use an AGP graphics card.

Your Dell would use a PCI-e graphics card.

You can't buy "graphics memory", so obviously you bought system RAM instead. Return it.

Hi im having problems with my video card i cant find one?

how do i go about geting a new one or to update it but i cant find it to update it|||If you don't have a video card installed in one of your PCI slots, chances are it's onboard. Need help with video cards etc :(?

Hi guys.. I just downloaded a game and it's really laggy. ._.; My PC is pretty new, but I guess it has a crappy graphics card and stuff? I really need help with purchasing a decent/cheap card, maybe for less than $50. T_T; Doesn't matter if it's used. Also, can I add more GHz? I don't really know how these things work. x-x;

PS: When I play on the lowest settings, The lag reduces but it's still pretty laggy. ugh >.< The game is called 'Vindictus', and it's an online game.

The game's specs are as follows.

I don't feel the need to put the minimum requirements 'cause my PC pretty much passes it.. but it still freakin lags. >.<;

** Recommended: **

OS: Windows XP or higher

CPU: Duo Core or Higher ------ (What is this??)

RAM: 1 GB or Higher

HDD: Over 6 GB of Free Space

VGA: Nvidia GeForce 7xxx Series

Sound: 16 Bit Sound Card

Mine:

OS: Win-7

Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 215 Processor (2CPUs), ~2.7GHz ------ (What's the AMD Athlon for? >.<; Also, the minimum specs for the game is 2.4GHz)

Memory: 4096MB RAM

HDD: 392GB left after installation of the game.

There's also other stuff on the Display tab, i don't really know which one's helpful but here's some:

Name: NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce430 (The minimum specs for the game is 5xxx Series).

Approx. Total Memory: 1848 MB

What do you think I should update? I've never really messed with my CPU before. My friend said it was pretty easy to install the hardware..? idk >.<; Anyways, Thank you in advance.. I've actually been meaning to buy a graphics card for a while now but I just don't know which one..|||Your CPU is fairly decent. No need to touch it, no upgrades needed.

As far as your graphics performance goes, it's currently very poor because you are using an integrated graphics chipset, which has very little processing power and has to rely on system RAM to use as VRAM.

So the best thing you can do for it is to add in a dedicated graphics card, unfortunately with a budget as low as $50 there aren't many good cards laying about that you can buy -- so you might have to try and win an auction from eBay for cheap.

Try a Radeon 4670 for example (auction ends in 17 hours)

http://cgi.ebay.com/Sapphire-Technology-…

Though I would suggest buying new:

$62

Radeon 5550 (slightly more powerful, only costs a tad more, and it comes with full 2 year warranty. You don't get that with a 2nd hand card)

However if you are talking about Graphics cards, then you need to go to a computer hardware store or a computer hardware website and buy a new graphics card. After that you have 2 choices:

1) you install it your self.

2) you go to someone or a store that knows how to handle computer hardware and have them install it.

So whether you are upgrading the chipset of the GC you still have to spend money

Or you may need to update Direct X, try this website:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907884. It is Microsoft's recommendation and requirements for running Age of Empires 3. Hope that helps :)|||It means your driver for your video card is out of date and you should get it updated. First of all, you need to figure out what brand is your video card and what type it is. After that, you go to their websites and they SHOULD have a section for downloading drivers. Download it, install it and your Video Card should be updated. If you can't figure out what kind of video card you have you can use device manager or this program: Belarc Advisor. Get it here: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

However, you must keep this tip in mind. Your video card will not last forever, it will eventually burn out and you will need to get a new one.

Also, sometimes your video card isn't powerful enough and you need a more powerful one. Be sure to check the System Requirements on your game case :).|||Well what you should do is go to start run then type dxdiag into the run box. After that a window will pop up and you will beable to see what video card you have. Once you find out google (name of video card) driver. Download it and install it. If that doesn't fix the problem then you need a new graphics card (part of computer that plays games and does picturey... stuff) Unfortunatly if your playing this on a laptop your out of luck because you cant update a graphics card on a laptop. If your on a desk top you can buy and install a graphics card from around 50$.

Why do all my video cards end up being "unrecognized"?

Not sure if it's a case of bad luck, or people don't know what they're talking about...

It seems that the three video cards I've dealt with (one from a friend, two I've owned) ended up being cards that "weren't recognized" by most games I have. I'd get a warning that the game may not run right. The game usually runs fine but I don't like seeing the warning.

The card I have now is a GT 430 - something decent and good for most games but nothing that would make my wallet incredibly light. it's worked well - but despite updating drivers I'm still a tad concerned over that error.

Given the large amount of video cards, I can only assume that those cards that fall between the main "known" cards would get this treatment, even if they're just as good. However I figured I'd ask and get a second opinion from others.|||mother boards video card need to match find place that can do work for your mother board could be just too old for new video card of today

A higher end Graphics Processor Unit (GPU) requires more amperage and wattage to the single 12V rail it will feed off of.

Video card/Ram problem?

Alright so this is what happened.I buy a 9400 gt 1gb ddr2 video card and set it up on my pc but then all of a sudden i looked at my system information and it said i had 504 RAM wich i do not i have 1.5gb of ram on my pc.So what i did was taker out the video card and check out my system info after and it said i had 1.5gb of ram but the same thing happened after i put the video card back inside.I decided to switch video cards for a 9500 gt 512mb ddr2 since i was told 9500 was more for gaming, when i bought this i installed it to the computer and updated it fine and the same exact thing happened it showed i still had 504 RAM.

right now im convinced i need a new power supply? idk much about computers but its kinda making sense and my current power supply is a 430 watt.(WoW gets real choppy with the low RAM) ='(|||9400/9500 are still a bit below "gaming" level cards. They will work for WoW since the video requirements allow you to run on lower end hardware. You'll want to have the graphics set to low to moderate though to avoid low frame rates, in cities and raids (especially if there will be AoE casting).

You may want to see if there is a BIOS update for your system. It might be that it was designed with a limit. Another option is to ensure you have disabled your onboard video in the BIOS. You may have a situation where the BIOS is still reserving some amount of RAM for the onboard video, even though you have a dedicated card installed. Most BIOS's disable it automatically, but maybe yours doesn't.

** Edit **

@ anonymous1_anonymous5 - This asker stated that they bought a 9400 card. This is not an integrated video card sharing system RAM.|||http://www.crucial.com

go though the three steps on how much RAM your motherboard can handle. Also check operating system limits on recognized RAM.

Sounds like you have an old motherboard with the 504 RAM. That is 8 meg short of 512 (both powers of 2). I would not bother playing WOW on such an old system.|||You do not need a new power supply unless your PC starts bugging out, IE: Shutting down for no reason with the new card installed. Sounds to me like the video cards are caching RAM. If WOW is running slow and choppy and you have a decent speed processor, increase your RAM.|||looool... all of your answers are wrong. it's simple. nvidia's and ati's graphics cards can expand their graphical cache (making graphics faster) by sharing your RAM. as this cache can change and (i believe) that it is set at a low priority, it shouldn't be of any performance hit.|||There should be a power usage in BIOS that you can check.

I think the problem is with your 1GB Ram. try to unplug and put it back again.|||Exactly where do you see this "504 RAM" Listed? Is this in the control Panel properties or in the Device manager? Please respond need more info.

My laptop can not find its own video card.?

So i restored my computer. Since i restored it i was updating all of my programs with windows updater. While it was updating something happened and now my colors look all screwed up and everything look big. I tried changed the color resolution but it still not working. It also cant find its own video card. I have a 64 bit windows vista. I have restarted it many times and its not working. Dont know what to do....|||What's the complete product name or chipset or graphics card does your laptop use?

What's happening to your computer is that, the screen resolution's set to a very low 640x480 for compatibility reasons. and as for the colors, it might've been set to 16 bit or lower. for the practically same reason.

so, if you've found the model or particular chipset or graphics card used by your laptop, use another PC with an internet connection and download the drivers for it online.there's no problem with that. you just have to install the proper drivers for your laptop.

God luck! you can tell me the model name or motherboard or GPU your laptop's got and i'll send you the link to the sight where you can get it. ^_^ good luck.|||maybe you need to reinstall the video card driver.. download it from the manufacturer web page or from driverguide.com

How can a CPU affect my Video Card performance ?

I have an Intel 2 Quad Core q9300 ((6M Cache, 2.50 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB)

I'd like to update my video card to let's say Nvidia GTX 560 Ti.

Can my CPU slow down my graphics card performance if i wanna use it to its almost full power ?

(you may say that there is no game today that can use all the power of that video card , but there is actually a game called Mount&Blade Warband , where modding it requires almost all that power i think). Do i need to upgrade my CPU too ?

Thanks.|||I wouldn't upgrade my CPU, I would wait till the the price drops on them.

Sometimes its how the game interacts with the graphic card itself causing the problem.

I have the same CPU and a Nvidia GeoForce 9800 GT and it runs Games fairly well(Sorry I dont have the FPS on any games) and I play on my 42 inch LCD, TV.

Video card, Processor and RAM all affect your frame rate. Typically one (usually the video card) is the bottleneck that slows down your frame rate the most.

If it's just a FPS, it's mostly graphics card, since most of the environmental are handled by the video card (such as shading and mapping and the like).

But the CPU works different with different video cards

and if you upgrade, what are you going to upgrade to?

I you are going to make a big enough difference, you will have to by a new motherboard and get a i series Intel or AMD CPU, because the Quads are the highest to get on a 775 chip-set, if you get a bigger quad, there isn't going to be that much of a difference because they don't go up much higher.

also Video cards have Cores and processors of there own|||Your CPU will not bottleneck with that GPU so no worries :)

But, just to clarify, the CPU is all about loading things quicker. Each shape rendered by the graphics unit needs to be processed fast enough to be enjoyed by the gamer. So how it generally works is that the GPU will render all the environment (as someone mentioned), details, lighting occlusion and tessellated objects and PhysX (Nvidia). But, to be seeing all that smoothly, you need a CPU that can process all that fast enough.|||No you're fine, you don't really need more than a Quad Core for gaming. I had a Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition up until now with a 5770 and it gave me no problems. I upgraded to a 1090T, and that's because it was a gift for Christmas.

You can get a Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 off Newegg for $200, I suggest you go with the 5870.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…

Video Card Question.?

Ok, I play a high performance game...Fs9. ( Flight simulator) and I need to upgrade my computer. I have 2GB of ram, a horrible ATI-200 graphic card w/ 128 Memory and a my CPU is Intel® Pentium® D Processor 805 (dual-core)1

(2.66GHz, 533MHz FSB, 2 x 1MB L2 cache)

So I get about 30 FPS when it's locked on 30 in a non dense area..But if I'm flying in a dense auto gen area like NYC, it drops to 11 FPS.

So on average my textures are blurry, and My fps could be better.

What should be updated? My video card or processor. A lot of people say processor, but I think I should get a 512 Mb video card...

What do you "pros" think? |||vid card.

Video Card Recommendation for The Sims 3?

** I WILL CHOOSE BEST ANSWER!!!***

I need a better video card for gaming....specifically for playing The Sims 3...Read my PC's info and any advice or Video Card Recommendations (that are compatible with my PC would be GREATLY appreciated!!!)

My PC is pretty outdated...

Compaq Presario SR1720NX

Currently my PC is using ATI Radeon Xpress 200 series (I know, it's bad lol)

I recently added 1 GB of RAM so my PC meets all the requirements of The Sims 3 EXCEPT for the video card...I'm able to play the game, but it crashes often since I desperately need to update my video card.

The power supply for my PC is just 250 Watts...so that might limit me to the video cards out there...what's the best I can do with 250 Watts?

I would like to get another ATI Radeon Video Card...but I need some recomendations from people who know a little more about computers than I do....I need a video card that is compatible with my PC of course, but I have no idea how to tell if one is compatible...help please??

(Also I don't want to spend too much...less than $200 would be best...I need best (most decent lol) graphics for cheapest price)

The Sims 3 Requires:

Graphics card with 128 MB with support for Pixel Shader 2.0

Here's a list The Sims 3 Recommends:

ATI Radeon 9500 series, 9600, 9800, X300, X600, X700, X800, X850, X1300, X1600, X1800, X1900, X1950, 2400, 2600, 2900, 3450, 3650, 3850, 3870, 4850, 4870, Intel ® Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) GMA Series 3 Series 4 GMA.

Based on my PC...power supply, video card compatibility....& best $price$ what would you recommend for me??|||Your motherboard has 1 pcie slot so that means it can support todays newest and greatest graphics card!

But your power supply is only 250 watts so you are very limited in your choices...

Also I am assuming you cpu is Sempron (P) 3500+ 2.0 GHz which is very old so you should not buy the most expensive card you can because your cpu will potentially bottleneck your graphics card. I got your cpu info from this link below

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/Tec…

I would recommend this card. It is from the ATI 4000 series which is their newest models. $35

System requirements for the card are provided in the link below and it says 300w required but you will be fine with your 250 watt power supply.

http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/g…

If you think you might want a new power supply to "play it safe" then this one should be more than enough. $30

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as…

thats really about the only card worth running in that system...might get medium settings....upgrading to 2 gigs of ram will help you out also...

in order to get a really decent card in there you would need to upgrade the power supply...not to mention the pc is at the end of its life cycle really...might wanna look for or start pricing a new pc....jmho....

Any advice for this Video Card problem?

As you can see by this screenshot -> http://yfrog.com/jldesktopwdj I have a video card problem.

Here are my computer specs:

Windows 7 64-Bit

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core

4 Gb RAM,

nvidia GeForce 9800GT

I have updated all the latest drivers, the latest direct X ec.

Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong?

I appreciate your help.|||If it is still under warranty, send it back to the manufacturer for another one.

If not, then it's time to upgrade your video card.|||It's time for a new graphics card. Looks like hardware failure to me.

Is it really worth the hassle to update your video card driver?

I've always used nvidia geforce cards and they always have little upgrades for the drivers and you have to uninstall the one you have, then HOPE that the other one installs correctly before something gets messed up, etc.... is it really worth it? plus my monitor keeps "flashing" (turning off then back on for a second), how do i fix that?|||If your computer seems to be working fine, then generally speaking it isn't necessary to update the drivers. New drivers usually fix bugs and specific issues that may not even apply to you. In some cases they can also provide overall improved performance or add new features. I've found that you don't have to uninstall the old nvidia drivers before installing the new ones.

If you have a CRT monitor, then the flashing issue you're experiencing may be a sign that it's time for a new one. I've had monitors do that to me before and shortly therafter they died. You may be able to get it to stop by lowering the refresh rate or resolution or both. If you have an LCD, then I suggest contacting the manufacturer for further support.|||maybe with an upgrade, or new monitor|||Absolutely worth updating , Having the Video driver working at optimum lightens the load on the rest of the processing , the whole system will thank you . Always update the components of the system , It helps the components to agree with a wider range of software , and drivers from other hardware.|||No not really, unless you have a software that needs the update. My PC uses the same driver for two years now and i don't notice any problems, it performs well enough compared to a PC with updated drivers (i.e. same applications works well on both PCs). I don't think you don't need to update everytime a new version comes out.

Also the newer drivers do not support older video cards, i use an old Nvidia UDA 61.76 driver for TNT/Riva cards. Newer drivers does not support these cards even though Nvidia claims that they use a Universal Driver Architecture that's supposed to support all GPU models.

Your monitor "flashing" problem might be caused by incorrect or incompatible video drivers. Try uninstalling your driver and remove all traces of it in your registry (using regedit) and manually deleting driver files in c:\windows directory. BE CAREFUL YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING BEFORE YOU DO THIS. Restart your PC and have it detect you video card and install generic XP video adapter drivers. Try installing an nvidia driver which you have previously installed that does not cause "flashing." If that doesn't work your last resort is reformatting and reinstalling your OS for a clean start.

I was wondering if i got a 3850 HD ATI video card and updated the drivers to the most up to date drivers would it be just as good as the newer ATI?|||New video drivers do boost performance, but mostly for the newer cards. Driver designers don't put much effort into boosting performance on older cards.

Mostly, what they care about is what kind of performance numbers a new card gets when they release it, because that's what affects sales. Mostly those benefits 'trickle down' to older cards. So if they're going to benefit your 3850, they'll probably also benefit most of the superior cards too. The newer cards will still have the edge.

And many improvements will only work on newer cards that have the hardware to support them. (And sometimes they deliberately disable some improvements on older cards. They will usually claim it's because they couldn't/didn't test them, and in fairness, it does cost money to do that.)|||yes especially if it is nvidia make

Is the video card the only factor for computer graphics quality?

Hi, I'm just wondering, I'm doing a little upgrade fo my old computer, and been wanting to update to new better parts, and I dont know whether I should get a very good card (9800GTX+) or a 9800GTAnd my computer only supports 2gb ram, so I dont want to spend more money than i haver to.

So, to recap and simplify, If i buy a very good graphics card, with average computer parts, will I still get very good graphics?|||Yes. They will perform better. You should get a 9800GT not the + because you wont be able to tell the difference in quality with those lower quality parts|||Depends on if the games meet your processor requirements. What kind of CPU do you have?

Computer screen is blurry but on screen display (menu) of the monitor isn't, is it a video card problem? Help?

I have an HP monitor I got a few years back, here's the link

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/produ…

A few days ago, it started to look really blurry, where everything had a 'ghost' or shadow image. It hurts my eyes to look at. I thought it had to do with something physical like a burnt out video card or something (keep in mind I don't speak machine) but if that were true, shouldn't the on screen display (menu, brightness, etc) have the same blurriness? It doesn't, it's perfectly sharp and clear.

If that's true, do you guys have any idea what I can do? I've updated all the drivers, I've ran it in safe mode and it's still blurry, I've tried system restore to a date where it wasn't blurry, and I tried running the CD it came with but that CD doesn't work on vista, as the monitor was for an old XP computer. I know that's not the problem though because everything's been running smoothly for the last 2 years.

Also, I've adjusted the resolution, it's at the same resolution it's always been, the native resolution.

Any ideas?|||Bad cable connection or the cable is bad. Some bad vga cable do this on high resolutions.

Check the connection on the video card and display.

Check the osd is not related to computer.

use a smaller resolution|||In the control panel, look for "clear type tuning" click on it and check settings. When I had the same type of problem I turned it off, restarted computer and it was fine.|||check both ends of the cable that connects the pc to the monitor are fitted correctly

they do come loose ,, this may course the blurry screen image|||Why the heck would a video card affect the OSD of the monitor? That's 100% independent of your video card.

Try maxing out the resolution.
